According to The Telegraph, President Barack Obama faces 30 death threats each day.
Some threats to Mr Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicised, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.
Most however, are kept under wraps because the Secret Service fears that revealing details of them would only increase the number of copycat attempts. Although most threats are not credible, each one has to be investigated meticulously.– The Telegraph.
Threatening the President of the United States is a class D felony under United States Code Title 18, Section 871. It consists of knowingly and willfully mailing or otherwise making “any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States“. The United States Secret Service investigates suspected violations of this law and monitors those who have a history of threatening the President. —Wikipedia
Tonight, on Twitter [sigh]
The Secret Service investigates every potential death threat against a president. Obviously Alyssa is young and not one of the brightest crayons in the box. How many American tax dollars will be spent on investigating this tweet?
A note to Alyssa: Delete your tweet, delete your Twitter account, unplug your computer and dump your smartphone. Stay off the web until you learn that death threats are never cool – especially when directed at the President of the United States.
Update: [9-7-12] Alyssa’s Twitter account was deleted this morning. Perhaps that will chill out the mob mentality in the Twitterverse…
